One of the primary “small” arms weapons used by American Army infantry is the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). The SAW is legally referred to as the Light Machine Gun, 5.56 mm, and is officially known as the M249 light machine gun (LMG). It was modified from a weapon made in Belgium called the FN Minimi. FN Herstal produces the light machine gun known as the FN Minimi (FN). Moreover, it is produced by the same business. This weapon, which was first used in 1984, gives infantry squads the rapid rate of fire of a machine gun while also demonstrating precision and mobility that is comparable to a rifle. Both linked ammo and STANAG magazines, similar to those used in the M16 and M4, may be used to feed the M249 weapon. In order to reduce the proportionate weight of the ammunition to the weapon system and enable high rates of continuous firing, linked ammunition uses metal links to hold and feed individual cartridges into it.
The M249 is a shoulder-fired, air-cooled, gas-operated weapon that is belt- and magazine-fed. The M249 machinegun shoots from the open-bolt position, just like the M240B machinegun. It can shoot ammo from a connected belt as well as an M16 magazine. The M249 gives the Marine Corps an a light automatic weapon with improved firepower and significantly longer effective ranges than threat weapons of a comparable caliber when using M855/SS109 ammunition.
