One of the primary “small” arms weapons used by American Army infantry is the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). The SAW is legally referred to as the Light Machine Gun, 5.56 mm, and is officially known as the M249 light machine gun (LMG). It was modified from a weapon made in Belgium called the FN Minimi. FN Herstal produces the light machine gun known as the FN Minimi (FN). Moreover, it is produced by the same business. This weapon, which was first used in 1984, gives infantry squads the rapid rate of fire of a machine gun while also demonstrating precision and mobility that is comparable to a rifle. Both linked ammo and STANAG magazines, similar to those used in the M16 and M4, may be used to feed the M249 weapon.
