Developed at the request of NATO as a replacement for the 9mm round. The 5.7x28mm cartridge is a bottleneck cartridge was first conceived in the late 80s becoming a real thing when FN rolled out the P90 and Five-seveN Personal Defense Weapons. Put into service in 2006 and used by over 40 Nations the 5.7×28 is better suited to to penetrate body armor  than standard pistol rounds. Since its adoption other weapons manufacturers have developed firearms around the cartridge.
