Rifle length gas systems actually make the weapon perform more dependably. The longer gas system increases the rifle’s dwell time, which enables all the moving parts to move slowly enough for the magazine to operate at peak efficiency.

The original M16 rifle used in the Vietnam War was the inspiration for the rifle length system. The 20-inch barrel of this rifle and the location of the gas outlet were chosen to work in accordance with the Army’s new bayonet. As strange as it may sound, the gas port was positioned so that the bayonet could properly interact with the bayonet lug and the end of the barrel because the bayonet lug was integrated into the gas block. Other than making sure the rifle worked properly, dwell time and gas pressure were not a major issue; the only requirement was to keep the service rifle’s bayonet mountable.
