The German designed and produced MP5  (Machine Pistol 5) was developed by HK back in the early 1960s by some fun loving Germans who wanted to carry on the roller delayed technology found in the MG42, but in a more fun sized form factor.  The Israelis had already introduced the UZI and its popularity lasted well into the 80s when the Mp5 was made famous by the British in Operation Nimrod during the Embassy siege in Iran.
